When we are born again, the trouble starts; the battle between the ego and the Holy Spirit begins and will continue until one or the other has departed, for there can be no peace where these two dwell together.
One of the things that is missing today amongst God’s people is true repentance, repentance that brings true peace. One of the reasons for this is that repentance is not rightly understood. True repentance must lead to a surrender of that which is repented of; the notion that prevails in the Catholic Church, for example, which teaches that the same sin can be forgiven, and then repeated and forgiven, ad infinitum, is not true repentance.
True repentance is turning around; that is, giving up that which is repented of; it is not forgiveness itself; forgiveness follows true repentance, not just confession.
We should keep in mind the words of the reformation martyr who told his executioner not to be burdened by what he was going to do because “You take from me that which I cannot keep and give me something that I can never lose”.
