“….the Spirit of truth, whom the world is unable to receive” (John 14:17).
It is not the body of truth that enlightens, but the Spirit of truth.
Many have knowledge; few have truth; you can be an expert on the major doctrines of Christianity and commit vast chunks of God’s Word to memory and yet still be inwardly blind to truth. If you read the Bible with an open heart you must inevitable be drawn to the conclusion that obedience is the key to everything that is promised therein.
That is why the world cannot receive the Spirit of truth; it refuses to obey. The same can be said of many who profess faith in Jesus Christ; they are inwardly blind because they refuse obedience and so the truth is not able to set them free. They remained bound in the prison of self – self interest, self indulgence, self esteem – where they can pursue devout religious practices that can never bring them truth.
Truth is manifest in a believer when faith finds its place of residence and becomes lodged in the will, not the mind or even the heart. It is only as you surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ that the eternal Spirit of truth can inwardly enlighten you and illuminate the body of truth, and then the truth you know in your mind will become known in your spirit, and life will flow, and you will find yourself irrevocably altered.
In the great day of the Coming of Christ Jesus, the only thing that will matter is whether you have been inwardly enlightened, inwardly regenerated and inwardly purified.
